BOWEN OFF THE MARK AS HAMMERS MOVE ON UP

-

JARROD BOWEN opened his West Ham account to help move the Hammers out of the bottom three and give David Moyes his first win since his first game back in charge at the London Stadium.

Bowen, an £18million January arrival from Hull City, put the hosts ahead on 15 minutes after lifting the ball over Saints goalkeeper Alex McCarthy.

The West Ham striker said: ‘I think that’s the way it went in my dreams last night! We held on and got the three points, which is really important.

‘Our assistant manager said the keeper liked to go down. I knew the angle was tight, so I got enough on it to dink it over him.’

But the visitors were level on the half-hour mark as Michael Obafemi turned in James Ward-Prowse’s cutback.

Five minutes before half-time, West Ham retook the lead as club-record signing Sebastien Haller steered home from a tight angle.

On 54 minutes, Saints had a mountain to climb as Michail Antonio got on the end of Pablo Fornals’ pass to bend in for 3-1.

Saints’ scorer Obafemi said: ‘It was good to get the goal but, in the end, it meant nothing. They’re a good team but, at the end of the day, it’s not good enough. We’ll go again.’

Newcastle and Burnley could not be separated as the clubs shared a 0-0 draw at St James’s Park.

Matt Ritchie went closest for the hosts but they have now failed to score in each of their last four league matches.

Jordan Ayew ended Crystal Palace’s sevenyear wait for a win at Brighton after netting the only goal of the game in a 1-0 win that moves the Eagles up to 12th.
