Man held in murder inquiry after boy of 15 dies

- By Georgia Edkins and Katherine Sutherland

A MAN has been arrested following the apparent murder yesterday of a 15-year-old schoolboy.

Officers said last night they were treating the death of the teenager, named locally as Sean Ford, as ‘suspicious’.

A 20-year-old man was detained, police added, but stressed that inquiries were at an early stage.

Police were called to Charles Street in Craigneuk, near Wishaw, Lanarkshire, shortly after 5am following reports from ambulance crews of a teenager with serious injuries.

The boy was taken to Wishaw General Hospital, where he later died.

Last night, friends and locals in the area paid tribute.

Leanne Neilson wrote: ‘Thinking of his family – great wee guy.’ Another said: ‘RIP Sean Ford, took far too soon.

‘Soundest wee guy so he was, such a cruel world. Heart goes out to his family.’ A third posted: ‘Absolutely devastated to hear that another young boy’s life has been taken from him way too soon.’

A fourth wrote: ‘You were the best person going and I was lucky to call you my best pal. See you on the other side, bro.’

A fifth commented: ‘You were the happiest person about, you didn’t deserve that, you’re too good for this world... until we meet again brother.’

Other locals spoke of a second teenager being taken to hospital, but police were last night unavailable for comment.

Appealing for witnesses to come forward, Detective Chief Inspector Alan Sommerville, of the major investigations team, said officers were providing support to the boy’s family.

He added: ‘[They] will remain in the area over the coming days as part of the ongoing investigation and to provide public reassurance.

‘Anyone who may have information relating to the teenager’s death or who saw any suspicious behaviour in the area around this time, particularly in Charles Street, Flaxmill Avenue and Glencairn Avenue, is urged to come forward.’
