ANYTHING YOU CAN DO LEWIS...

CAPALDI’S DR WHO STAR COUSIN TURNS MUSICIAN

- By Beverley Lyons

HE is best known as the twelfth Time

Lord on Doctor Who. Now Scots star Peter Capaldi is doing a little regenerating of his own – by turning into a musician.

The 62-year-old says he has been inspired by his chart-topping cousin, Lewis Capaldi, and is set to release his first single later this year.

The actor dipped his toe into the music scene in the 1980s with his art school band, The Dreamboys, but it is only since starring in the video for Lewis’s global number one Someone You Loved that he decided to pick up his guitar again.

He said: ‘It’s all happened a bit by accident, and it’s fun and that’s the way I want it to stay. I’m just having a go and seeing what will happen really.’ Capaldi, who played the Doctor from 2013 to 2017, spoke of his ‘pride’ at his young superstar cousin’s success.

He said of 23-year-old Lewis, the son of his second cousin Mark Capaldi: ‘I saw him about two years ago in a small venue in Shepherd’s Bush, which was already packed and everybody knew all the words to all his songs. I thought he was incredible. Although I didn’t know him growing up, I felt so proud of him.’

The chance of the two Capaldis having a musical collaboration remains unlikely. ‘That conversation has not been had because Lewis is very busy and very, very big,’ Capaldi said. His new song If I Could Pray was recorded with Dr Robert of The Blow Monkeys but music is a ‘nice little side project,’ he said, with acting remaining Capaldi’s focus. He will play First World War poet Siegfried Sassoon in a film due out later this year.
