Jose’s switch helps to salvage point for Spurs

- By Joe Bernstein

JOSE MOURINHO abandoned his tactical experiment at half-time as Spurs came back strongly to earn a draw at Turf Moor.

With Eric Dier in the thick of the action after his difficult week, Burnley deserved their lead provided by Chris Wood’s strike.

But Mourinho made two changes and scrapped his unexpected 3-4-3 formation at the interval and his two substitutes, Giovani Lo Celso and Lucas Moura, were involved in the move that led to Ben Mee tripping Erik Lamela in the box.

Dele Alli converted from the spot in front of England manager Gareth Southgate for his 50th Premier League goal and both sides then had chances to win it, with Lo Celso and Alli curling wide for Spurs and Matej Vydra foiled late on by goalkeeper Hugo Lloris at the other end.

The result leaves Spurs winless in five and Burnley unbeaten in five.

Nevertheless, Mourinho’s men can travel to Leipzig for Tuesday’s Champions League second leg with a degree of confidence and still only five points off fourth-place Chelsea despite their poor run.

‘I think the quality and the dynamic of Lucas and Lo Celso they made a difference,’ said the Spurs boss. ‘We had something in the second half that we did not have in the first half.

‘Many times we had to go long because midfielders were hidden. In the second half, they were showing themselves all the time.’

Burnley boss Sean Dyche believed his side should have had a penalty minutes after Alli’s strike when Davinson Sanchez made a strong challenge on Wood.

‘We are in dangerous territory here because if a player doesn’t dramatically play-act for a penalty now, he doesn’t get it,’ said Dyche.
