China should foot the bill for this chaos

-

I was heartened to read that the Government is intending to take up the matter of the coronavirus pandemic with China.

The inhumane live meat markets that caused Covid-19 are back open for business unchanged – except now officials are trying to ensure Western journalists do not take any photographs of the animals.

Ever since this affair began, I have felt great anger towards the antics of China. I have felt like a lone voice when trying to raise this issue with friends, as everyone’s focus is naturally on trying to stay healthy and not contract the virus.

This pandemic will translate into higher taxes, a huge debt for generations to come, and a lower standard of living for us, our children, and possibly beyond.

Much more importantly, China will have been directly responsible for many thousands of deaths.

The world should unite and ask China to pay the bill. I have also decided to boycott China’s goods entirely. I suggest everyone else does the same. David Barrie, Malvern

China should have shared information about the virus much sooner, letting the rest of the world know about the dangers of it spreading like wildfire. Countries would have been much more prepared. Eve Webster, Little Neston, Cheshire

It must be time to make a stand against China’s inhumane attitude towards animals that caused this virus to be unleashed on the world.

The only way to get them to change is by trade deals being curtailed. We saw from your articles last week that China’s live animal markets have restarted. Why is it that so few are prepared to make a stand against this? T. Oldaker, Northiam, East Sussex

I would like to thank The Mail on

Sunday for all the coverage it has given on the terrible atrocities that China has inflicted on animals in the past and is now continuing to do, despite having caused what must be one of the greatest disasters of recent history.

Thanks also to Iain Duncan Smith for his article last week – no matter how powerful or important China is to the world economy, we cannot risk this type of virus mutating into another form in the future, and China must be pressed by governments around the world to stop the barbaric suffering of live animals.

I would gladly welcome a ban on all goods from China. Our Government must garner the support of other governments around the world to achieve this, so at least there will be something positive coming out of this. Margaret Neal, Birmingham

Your pictures last week of cats and dogs in cages in China waiting to be killed and eaten absolutely broke my heart. In a world that is meant to be civilised, how can this still be allowed to happen?

Lucy Wood,

How can we trust a country like China, which is responsible for so many deaths around the world and is reopening the animal markets that caused this pandemic?

Maybe it is time to review our response to China taking part in the 5G mobile phone roll-out.

There are other companies with the skills to help us with this. J.D.C., Bathgate, West Lothian
