It’s OK for nations to go it alone
People are saying it is unfair that the three Celtic countries of the UK can just do their own thing when it comes to exiting lockdown.
Can I correspondingly say, for the sake of balance, that it is similarly unfair that England can just do its own thing and assume that its approach is the correct one? Dewi Williams, Rhoose, Vale of Glamorgan
Furlough rethink
A survey suggests that people who have been furloughed don’t want to go back to work.
Staying at home and being paid is attractive.
The furlough idea was necessary but the time has come to stop it.
We can’t afford it. Some of the furloughed people, unfortunately, may not have a job to go back to and the chance of this will increase the longer the scheme exists. It’s time for a rethink. Chris Sharp, Leeds
Clear up litter laws
As someone who is furloughed during the Covid-19 lockdown, I have taken to spending most mornings doing voluntary litter pick-ups around my local area.
There is always plenty to do and more so nowadays as in addition to the usual takeaway food and drink containers, our streets and hedgerows are up against discarded paper towels, wipes, disposable gloves and face masks.
I commend the work of all litter pickers but without government enforcement, we’re pushing against a tidal wave.
If the Government can lock an entire nation down, it can announce that littering is illegal and that any driver spotted throwing rubbish out of their car will get a £100 fine and three penalty points.
Otherwise, we’ll have a health crisis, economic crisis and environmental crisis. Richard Morrow, Bishopbriggs, near Glasgow
Waste of a holiday
Rather than having yet another Bank Holiday during lockdown, wouldn’t it have made sense to move it to later in the year? Tim Mickleburgh, Grimsby
