Scared parents to home school

-

HOME schooling in Scotland is set to boom after lockdown, according to an education charity.

The Scottish Government has announced schools will reopen for pupils next month – but some parents are worried about the risk of infection to their children, while others are concerned about standards.

Laurie Matthew, a trustee with home education charity Schoolhouse, said: ‘We have seen a massive influx from those looking for support since lockdown started in March, and it continues to grow.

‘We answer enquiries every day from those who have been in constant contact with us or those looking for information on how to withdraw from the school roll with intent to home educate.

‘Lockdown has been a great insight for parents to get a small glimpse of what home education could be like.’

Meanwhile, Alison Preuss, founder of UK Home Education Forums online network, said: ‘We can report many more parents are seeking to formally withdraw children from school rather than send them back in August.’

However, a Scottish Government spokesman said: ‘We encourage local authorities and schools to work with parents to overcome any barriers to learning and ensure attendance.’
