Sussexes considered gatecrashing Sandringham to talk to the Queen

- By Mark Hookham

FRUSTRATED Prince Harry considered making a surprise visit to the Queen to thrash out his and Meghan’s future after growing tired of being ‘blocked’ from seeing his grandmother.

During a break in Canada with their son Archie last December, the Sussexes decided that they wanted to step back as senior Royals, although they still planned to carry out duties on behalf of the Queen.

According to Finding Freedom, Prince Charles’s private office was asked to schedule an appointment for the couple to meet the Queen at Sandringham after their return to Britain on January 6.

But, claim authors Omid Scobie and Carolyn Durand, the requests were rebuffed.

‘Despite repeated follow-ups with his father’s office, he [Harry] was unable to secure time with the Queen,’ the book claims. ‘She would not be available, he was told, until January 29. “He felt like he was being blocked,” a source close to the Prince said.’ The book suggests the couple were so exasperated that they thought about simply turning up at Sandringham unannounced – a major breach of Royal protocol.

‘As their Air Canada flight made its early morning touchdown at Heathrow, and still with no appointment to see Her Majesty, Harry and Meghan toyed with the idea of driving straight to see the Queen,’ says an extract of the book serialised by The Times.

However, the couple – who had spent two months at a £14 million property on Vancouver Island owned by a US record producer – thought better of what would probably have been an escalation in the mounting tension between them and other members of the Royal Family.

‘Not wanting to cause problems for themselves (arriving unannounced would have ruffled feathers), the couple instead called for a meeting at their home, Frogmore Cottage,’ the book adds.
