Volley good show! Families have a ball in 23C heatwave
SUNSEEKERS flocked to beaches across Scotland yesterday as the country basked in soaring temperatures.
Troon in Ayrshire hosted a game of beach volleyball, normally the preserve of Rio’s Copacabana beach, as the mercury hit 23C (73F).
At 9.30am, the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park used social media to warn: ‘If you are planning a hillwalk today then parking close to Ben Lomond and Ben Vorlich is already full.
‘Cars are already parking along the edge of the A82 at Inveruglas and on the road at Rowardennan.
‘Pick somewhere less busy and enjoy your walk.’
By mid-morning, car parks in the Stirlingshire town of Callander were also full, with visitors being urged to find another beauty spot where they could enjoy the weather.
Traffic Scotland tweeted: ‘Please consider an alternative destination this sunny Saturday.’
There were reports of police moving dangerously parked cars near the Glen Nevis Visitor centre near Fort William, Inverness-shire, while in the East, lengthy waits of up to 25 minutes built up on the Fife-bound approach to the Queensferry Crossing. In Ayrshire, ferry operator CalMac was forced to suspend all services from Largs to Cumbrae because of the high number of prospective passengers.
There were jams on the A9 in Perth at the Inveralmond roundabout and at several locations on the A82 around
Loch Lomond.
Police Scotland sent officers to the beachfront at Portobello, Edinburgh, following disturbances last weekend.
An alcohol ban was imposed at Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Park following recent disorder. It is also in force today.
Today will also be warm and sunny, with the hottest temperatures in the West.
‘It’s been a perfect, blue-sky summer day,’ said the Met Office’s Bonnie Diamond last night. However, forecasters warned the sunshine is not to last – heavy rain is due and the Met Office has issued a 72hour warning for thunderstorms from tomorrow.
