And the Emmy is awarded by... our presenter in a hazmat suit!

- From Caroline Graham

IT IS known as the ‘TV Oscars’ and is traditionally one of the most glittering nights of the Hollywood year.

But tonight’s 72nd Emmy Awards show in Los Angeles is promising to be one of the weirdest yet, with presenters ditching haute couture for hazmat suits and award-winners at home in bed wearing designer pyjamas.

The Crown star Olivia Colman, nominated for best actress, has already joked she might be in less formal attire when she watches the show – starting at 1am BST on Monday – via Zoom from her London home, telling a friend: ‘The dress code is “come as you are” so at 1am I’m probably going to be in bed in my PJs.’

While most of the show will take place virtually from the Staples Center in Hollywood, some LA-based stars will receive their awards in person from presenters wearing designerblack tuxedo hazmat suits created by Katja Cahill, who normally conjures up costumes for America’s Got Talent.

James Bond.

Now the favourite to become the new 007, the Peaky Blinders star’s betting price fell from 8/1 to 4/5 yesterday.

The betting frenzy was apparently sparked by a report on the film website The Vulcan Reporter, that Hardy, 43, had been offered the iconic role following a successful audition in June.

Ladbrokes spokesman Alex Apati said: ‘A flurry of bets over the past 24 hours suggest the cat is out of the bag and it’s Tom Hardy that’ll soon be replacing Daniel Craig as 007.’ out awards during a pandemic,’ a source working on the Emmys said last night. ‘We’ve had the hazmat suits specially designed in black with white cuffs. It’s very 2020.’

The source added that producers at ABC sent 130 cameras to 20 cities in ten different countries: ‘Stars like Paul Mescal and Olivia Coleman will be filming themselves and sending it in. What could possibly go wrong?’

Oscar winner Ms Colman is up against fellow Brit, Killing Eve’s Jodie Comer, in the Lead Actress – Drama Series category, but the favourite to win the award is Jennifer Aniston for The Morning Show.

Meanwhile Normal People’s Paul Mescal is favourite to win Outstanding Lead Actor for a limited series or movie, and vowed to wear a jacket ‘regardless of how late it is’.

Other nominees include Helena Bonham Carter (best supporting actress for The Crown) and Matthew Macfadyen (best supporting actor for Succession).

The Emmys is the first major awards show since Covid-19 shut down Hollywood. If successful, it is expected to become a roadmap for other ceremonies such as next year’s Oscars.
