Take a sailing ship to Iceland and meet TV’s Kate Humble

-

IF YOU need something to look forward to next year, Iceland makes a stunning destination. Its landscapes featuring towering waterfalls, mountains, glaciers and volcanoes wouldn’t look out of place on an alien planet.

Making this trip even more memorable will be sailing there in luxury aboard Tradewind Voyages’ Golden Horizon, the world’s largest squarerigged sailing ship.

You’ll begin your 15-day voyage in Greenock, on the coast near Glasgow, before enjoying the romance of time gone by and all the creature comforts of the magnificent Golden Horizon on your way to the land of fire and ice.

During your trip you’ll be joined by Kate Humble, who in a varied career with the BBC has presented Tomorrow’s World and Top Gear but now specialises in wildlife and science programmes, with credits including Springwatch with Bill Oddie and, lately, Animal Park with Ben Fogle.

Kate will meet you at Reykjavik’s fascinating Lava Centre, where you can find out all about Iceland’s volcanic make-up. There Kate will host a Q&A session. Your volcano experiences don’t end there, though. You’ll visit the active Katla and Hekla volcanoes, as well as the infamous Eyjafjallajokull – which last erupted in 2010, blasting out an ash cloud that shut down air travel across most of Europe – and get the chance to step inside a lava tunnel. The voyage also includes optional excursions for you to personalise your holiday**.

REASONS TO BOOK Discover Reykjavik

Explore the northernmost capital on Earth, which is also one of the world’s quirkiest cities. The arts scene is thriving, as is its cafe and bar culture, and the city enjoys a breathtaking setting between forbidding mountains and the steely grey seas of the North Atlantic. You will have time to admire the city’s creative flair and striking contemporary architecture, as well as enjoy its excellent restaurants. Travelling aboard Golden Horizon The ship has everything you’ll need to make this a luxurious voyage that you’ll never forget. The spectacular two-tier restaurant serves classic dishes made with locally sourced fresh produce. In addition, there are five bars, a library, spa, lounge and gym, while all the spacious en suite cabins enjoy sea views and wi-fi, and some come with free room service.

The Golden Circle

You’ll travel around the ‘Golden Circle’ – Iceland’s classic sightseeing route – with a stop at Thingvellir National Park in the south-west of the island. It’s the site of Iceland’s first parliament and where the American and Eurasian tectonic plates are gradually drifting apart.

Your trip is 100 per cent protected by the Travel Trust Association, so your money is safe and you will receive a full refund if your trip is cancelled due to the Foreign Office warning against travel because of Covid-19 restrictions.
