National success a tonic for the troops

- By Graham Swann

FOR Scotland, there has been no shortage of critics ready and waiting to give the state of the game a kicking over the years.

But now, as the national side sits one match away from finally ending their absence from a major tournament, respect is returning to the sport in this country.

As far as Steven Gerrard is concerned, there could be no better message to the footballing world as Scotland prepare to face Serbia in their Euro 2020 play-off final on Thursday.

Steve Clarke would certainly earn his place in folklore as the man who ended such a torturous wait for a country desperate to see their stars shine on the international stage.

Asked if it would be good for Scottish football to see Clarke’s men qualify for next summer’s tournament, the Rangers boss said: ‘Of course, it would be huge.

‘I think everyone who is representing Scotland at national-team level and also the clubs domestically is working as hard as we can to make the name of Scotland be respectable and back where it should be. On Thursday, it would be another huge step towards that, so I wish the lads well.’

Gerrard’s support ahead of the international break naturally comes mes with the hope his players will return rn in healthy condition for the resumption of domestic action.

Nevertheless, the Ibrox manager remains ‘proud’ of all his players who will represent their countries after today’s Premiership match at home to Hamilton Accies.

‘Look, I am proud of all my players who go away and represent nt their countries and I will be keeping an eye on all of them,’ said Gerrard. ‘I wish them all well, wish them all the best of luck and I hope they come back fit and healthy.

‘Beforehand, we have got to deliver three points and then it will be time to wish people all the best on international duty. Of course I want Scotland to qualify because I have players who are going away, they are my players, and I am proud to see them play.’

Gerrard’s debut at a major tournament arrived at Euro 2000, when he made a substitute substit appearance in England’s 1-0 w win against Germany.

H He still cherishes those memories of representing his country and hopes the current crop of Scots can deliver.

‘It is a fantastic experience and I am sure all the Scottish players, as young boys, dreamed of representing their country and also doing that in a major competition,’ he added.

‘They are close, they have got one more step to go. They have got to go there on Thursday and leave everything on the pitch and do the Scottish supporters proud. ‘If they do, then I am sure they can get the job done.’
