Zungu is in the zone for debut show

STEVEN GERRARD has revealed new signing Bongani Zungu could make his debut against Hamilton — and refused to rule out a contract extension for Steven Davis.

The South African midfielder has joined on loan from Amiens until the end of the season, with the option of a permanent move in the summer.

Zungu (pictured) landed in Glasgow at the start of October but has only recently joined up with his new team-mates after being forced to quarantine.

And Gerrard admits he has been impressed with what he has seen already in training from the 28-year-old.

Asked if he could come into his plans for the clash with Accies, the manager said: ‘Very much so in terms of him getting towards his level. We have been trying to accelerate that, giving him extra work after training. His application and attitude has been fantastic.

‘I am looking to get him involved as soon as possible. He is available for the weekend. We will see how he is looking and make a decision. From what I am hearing, and what I have seen so far, he is getting close.’

Veteran midfielder Davis has been one of the star performers this season as table-toppers Rangers look to extend their unbeaten run against Hamilton.

Having previously enjoyed a four-and-a-half-year spell at Ibrox, the Northern Irishman arrived from Southampton initially on loan in January 2019 before the move was made permanent in the summer of that year. His latest Rangers contract was extended last December until next summer.

Gerrard admits the time will come when a decision could be made over extending his stay at Ibrox.

‘It was actually the media that mentioned Steven to me and my answer to the question was that he was in scintillating form,’ said Gerrard.

‘He is a top professional, fantastic to work with and we need to try and keep Steven in this place between now and the end of the season because, if we do, I am sure he will contribute to the team very well.

‘It is too early to discuss contracts at the moment, we need to keep focusing on the football and that is something that myself and Ross (Wilson, sporting director) will discuss privately with certain players, agents and representation at the right time.

‘At the moment, all the focus needs to be on football and winning games and, when the time is right, we will discuss Steven’s future in private. And then when there is an update, we will let you guys know.’
