Buddies blow their golden

- By Graham Swann

THIS has been a week filled with anger and frustration for St Mirren. A return to Premiership action presented them with a chance to lift their spirits but instead there was more deflation.

Still reeling after being handed two 3-0 defeats and a suspended fine of £40,000 by the SPFL for breaching coronavirus protocols, this should have been a day when they could at least smile on the pitch.

Having dominated against Aberdeen in the first half, they fell behind to a header from Jonny Hayes.

They pulled themselves level, however, thanks to a penalty dispatched by Jamie McGrath.

The game appeared to swing in their favour when Dons midfielder Lewis Ferguson — back in the squad after being forced into self-isolation following an outbreak amid Scotland’s Under-21s a fortnight ago — was sent off for a second booking shortly after the break.

‘But I think if we can play to that kind of standard we will win more games than we lose. Of course, today I am standing here extremely disappointed and frustrated that we didn’t take all three points.

‘We had enough chances to put the game out of sight but unfortunately we didn’t do that. We have to be pleased with the way we played, the way we passed and probed — even at 11 against 11.’

Goodwin remained reserved when pressed on the result of the SPFL tribunal, which found the Paisley club
