Dealing in Kamara makes perfect sense for the manager

- By Graham Swann

STEVEN GERRARD has confirmed Rangers are continuing to monitor a new contract for Glen Kamara — and stressed there is no ‘desperation’ to add several signings next month.

But the Ibrox boss believes he would receive support from the club’s board if he was seeking to recruit fresh faces.

Kamara signed a four-and-a-half-year deal when he joined Rangers from Dundee for £50,000 in January 2019.

The 25-year-old Finnish midfielder has impressed his manager with his performances this season, with Arsenal, Marseille and Anderlecht among the clubs linked with an interest.

Having qualified for the last 32 of the Europa League for a second successive campaign, topping Group D would secure an additional financial bonus for Rangers, who recorded a £15.9million loss for the 12 months up to June 30.

Insisting the club will take their time over contract discussions, Gerrard says he will consider all options in the next transfer window.

‘I don’t think we’re in any mad rush but we’re certainly looking at certain situations with Glen and a few others,’ said Gerrard.

‘In terms of recruitment in January, we’re at a club where we’re always looking, so that never stops. It’s not a case of when we get close to January we think all of a sudden we’ve got to try and look for players to improve what we’ve got. It’s an ongoing thing.

‘If we see something out there that works financially and that we think that can make the team stronger, that’s something we’ll look in to. I’m really happy with where the squad is at in terms of competition for places.

‘There’s no desperation. But I’d probably predict there will be more going the other way rather than incomings.

‘I’ll never say never because, if something becomes available that we like and it makes sense, I do think I would get the support if we needed to do something.’
