Brown brings can-do attitude to Union

- By Gareth Rose SCOTTISH POLITICAL EDITOR

A CAMPAIGN to make the positive case for the Union is being launched today by Gordon Brown.

Scotland Can will challenge Nicola Sturgeon to stop obsessing about independence and use powers that her Government already has.

Over the coming weeks it will focus on education, jobs, environment and Scotland’s place in the world.

The Scotland Can website is being launched by Our Scottish Future, a think-tank launched by the former Prime Minister, in 2019 and will talk up the positives of being part of the UK.

Eddie Barnes, project manager for Our Scottish Future, said: ‘Leaders of the pro-independence movement have rightly argued that those of us who want to remain in the UK need to set out a positive argument.

‘This new campaign is about showing what we can do, not focusing on what we can’t. It isn’t about saying No, it is about making the case for action now.

‘We know that Yes and No voters are divided on the constitution. But we also know that they share many priorities for after the pandemic.

‘The aim here is to provoke some fresh thinking and to stimulate bigger and better ideas about how devolution can bring transformational change to Scotland.’

The Scotland Can website also aims to encourage experts, young Scots and frontline workers to set out new ideas to improve life in Scotland through devolution.

The think-tank is also challenging the UK Government to commit to a fresh review of the country’s governance following the Covid pandemic.

However, Keith Brown, deputy leader of the SNP, said: ‘Gordon Brown should be guided by the democratic will of the people of Scotland rather than his own narrow Unionism.’
