Trump Takes On The World
BBC2, 9pm
As this authoritative and well-researched series comes to an end, the final episode is devoted to Donald Trump’s dramatic foreign policy in regard to North Korea and geopolitically crucial China.
Washington insiders recall how terrifying moments of nuclear brinkmanship by
Kim Jong-Un gave way to the astounding summit between the dictator and Trump (right). Meanwhile, the president’s negotiations with Chinese leader Xi Jinping veered between mutual hostility and suspicion, and the hope of a trade deal with huge rewards for both nations.
Trump’s hankering for a historic legacy and his admiration of strong leaders overshadowed and often undermined the work being done by his own diplomats. And then a virus from China rewrote Trump’s final year and dashed his hopes of retaining power.
Channel 4, 9pm
As five celebrities prepare for their nervewracking debuts as stand-up comics, there’s all to play for – not to be judged the best but to avoid humiliation.
Each is paired with a professional comedian, and you’d put good money on the witty former pop star the Rev Richard Coles under David Baddiel’s tutelage. Jason Manford is delighted to be mentoring Shaun Ryder – but can he get the Happy Mondays frontman to prepare at all? Nick Helm is horrified to be saddled with a Tory in Baroness Sayeeda Warsi: how will they find common ground?
Meanwhile, Love Island star Curtis Pritchard has to show stand-up Judi Love that he’s more than just a gorgeous body, while for Zoe Lyons the problem is getting former Corrie actress Katie McGlynn (right with Lyons) to appear in public without a script. This is great TV. ★★★★★
