2020: The Story Of Us
ITV, 9pm
Hopes are rising that we are starting to see a way out of the pandemic, thanks to the falling number of infections and deaths from coronavirus, along with the successful rollout of the vaccine.
So it’s a suitable time to take stock, as Oscar-winning film director Kevin Macdonald looks back over the events of the past year, as experienced by staff and patients in the NHS.
Given rare access to intensive care units at hospitals across the country – including the Whittington in North London (where Professor Hugh Montgomery, right, works in intensive care) and the Royal Preston Hospital in Lancashire – Macdonald’s cameras capture the awful burden and tragic moments that were a daily fact of life for those on the coronavirus frontline. Not easy viewing but a vital account of history – dark as it was – in the making.
Channel 4, 9pm
She was blessed with charm and beauty, enjoyed the trappings of wealth and fame and, having dated Prince Harry and Harry Styles, seemed to be an icon of glamour. But it was only with her shocking death by her own hand last year at the age of 40 that the world understood the reality of the mental anguish Caroline Flack had suffered.
As this heart-rending documentary explains, the cracks in her image had been revealed to the public only weeks before she died, when she was charged with assaulting her boyfriend, resulting in her losing her post as presenter of Love Island.
But the story of her troubles is traced back to her childhood, as her family (including twin sister Jody, near right, with Caroline) and friends explain how, for all her success, her insecurities never went away, and were amplified by social media and being a public figure in the 21st Century. ★★★★★
