EDINBURGH JOY AFTER LATE CHAMBERLAIN TRY

- By Calum Crowe

EDINBURGH produced a stunning last-gasp comeback to beat Connacht in their Pro14 clash in Galway last night. Nathan Chamberlain was the hero for the Scots.

The young fly-half turns 21 today and kicked off his birthday celebrations in fine style with a match-winning performance.

Chamberlain jinked through the Irish defence to score the decisive try in the 83rd minute.

He then dusted himself down and converted as Richard Cockerill’s men stunned the hosts, who played the final 23 minutes with 14 men after a red card to captain Jarrad Butler.

‘The win’s obviously important for us,’ said Cockerill. ‘The weather conditions were pretty horrific.

‘I’m delighted the players stayed in the battle. We played quite poorly in the second half but we stuck in the fight.

‘Nathan is working really hard at his game. He’s been put under pressure to perform and, considering the conditions, I thought he played really well.’

Connacht made a blistering start and scored the opening try after just five minutes through centre Sean O’Brien, with fly-half Jack Carty adding the extras.

Magnus Bradbury went over to score for Edinburgh on 32 minutes after some good work from his fellow forwards. But Connacht hooker Shane Delahunt scored a try to leave Edinburgh trailing 14-5 at the break.

When Butler was sent off on 57 minutes for a dangerous tackle on Andrew Davidson, the game was there for the taking.

A Chamberlain penalty on 70 minutes brought Edinburgh to 14-8. That set the stage for his late try-scoring heroics.
