Where’s her tardis? Time traveller Karen takes a journey back to the 70s

- By Ashlie McAnally

HER first major role was as Doctor Who’s assistant Amy Pond.

But even now that she is firmly established as one of Scotland’s most successful TV and movie actresses, it seems Karen Gillan is still a fan of time travel.

For the 33-year-old appears to have transported herself back to the 1970s for a new photo shoot.

In a series of pictures for American magazine Foxes, Ms Gillan exudes a distinctly retro glamour.

In one image, she is stretched out on a sofa, in a black lace skirt and crisp high-neck white blouse, casually reading an old-fashioned magazine. In another retrostyle shot she wears a striped top and poses with a vinyl record on a turntable, her hair almost covering eyes heavy with smoky make-up.

Another picture shows her sporting a chic up-do as she sits with her long legs crossed, wearing a glitzy gold tasselled dress and gold stiletto-heeled sandals.

Possibly inspiring her latest look, her new movie is also set in the 1970s.

In action thriller Gunpowder Milkshake – showing on Netflix US now ahead of hitting the big screen later this year – Ms Gillan plays Sam, a young assassin who must join her mother, Game of Thrones star Lena Headey, as they try to save a young girl.

The production design and cinematography has been described as paying homage to the era’s action films with ‘loose-fitting suits in shades of green, burgundy and blue’ as well as the classic cars and weapons which add to the film’s look.

Ms Gillan, who grew up in Inverness, had never met her on-screen mother before filming but said that when they did meet on set, there was ‘an instant connection’.
