Harmon’s warning to Bryson

- JAMES SHARPE

BUTCH HARMON has called on Bryson DeChambeau to decide whether he wants to win majors or be a long drive champion.

Tiger Woods’ former coach and Sky Sports pundit believes the controversial DeChambeau is ‘in a little bit of limbo’ in his career.

DeChambeau’s obsession with power and swing speed has seen him pile on a tremendous amount of weight and muscle over the past few years, during which he has become the longest driver on the PGA Tour.

He finished seventh on his debut at the World Long Drive Championship in October last year but vowed to come back even ‘bigger and better’.

However, his transformation has not led to the 28-year-old dominating tournaments — and majors — like he anticipated.

DeChambeau claimed ahead of the delayed Masters two years ago that he would overpower Augusta, a course he described as ‘a par 67 for me’. He finished in a tie for 46th. ‘I think he proved it’s not possible (to overpower Augusta),’ said Harmon. ‘He can hardly play it, the way he plays.

‘Bryson DeChambeau is in a little bit of a limbo area right now. I don’t think he knows whether he wants to be a Tour player or a long drive champion.

‘We know that he’s had some injuries. I’ve said it before, he looks like he was building a swing to win now not for the future, because I don’t see how anybody’s body can withstand what he was putting on his body. And I think we’ve seen that because his play has been very erratic and it hasn’t been consistent.’

DeChambeau missed nearly two months earlier in the year with a torn labrum in his left hip and a fractured hamate bone in his left hand. On his return last month, he finished tied for 58th at the WGC Match Play that saw him drop to 14th in the world rankings and missed the cut at this week’s Valero Texas Open.
