SHOPPERS facing a lockdown staycation this summer can still enjoy the tastes and smells of the continent – thanks to this town centre market.

The continental street market returned to Newcastle town centre yesterday – and it’s here until Saturday.

Foods on offer include Thai noddles, gyros kebabs, baklava and cheeses. It is by the Guildhall and operates from 10am to 6pm each day.

Newcastle Borough Council booked the market as lockdown restrictions continue to ease across North Staffordshire.

Councillor Stephen Sweeney said: “It is great to bring the continental street market back again.

“We were unsure about whether we would be able to go ahead with the market this year due to the coronavirus pandemic and the lockdown.

“But we have seen Newcastle reopen safely over the last few weeks and felt it is safe to go-ahead.

“The continental street market has a splendid choice of delicious hot and cold food, as well as speciality takeaway delicacies.

“It is a perfect pick-me-up for Newcastle’s residents and shoppers after the scarcity of ingredients and choice during lockdown. I really hope everyone supports the traders who have agreed to bring their fare here for us, especially at this time.” Shoppers are thrilled to see the return of the continental market. Kayleigh Brereton, aged 27, from Silverdale, said: “It’s so nice to have something like this in Newcastle. “It’s nice to grab a coffee and have a look around the different stalls because the items are usually home-made and unique.”

Sharon Ball, aged 48, from Newcastle, said: “I like coming here with my daughter – it’s something different.

“I like to shop locally and I’m glad to see small businesses being able to trade again after the pandemic.

“It’s important to support them where we can. There is usually really nice food and you can try different things.” Widold Setleck – who runs a fudge stall – said: “I have missed trading during the lockdown. It is nice to get out again.”
