AUTHORITY’S WARNING OF ‘LOCAL LOCKDOWN’

-

A COUNCIL leader has warned that new restrictions may be introduced if Covid infections continue to rise - following the area’s inclusion on the national watchlist.

Cheshire East has been named as an ‘area of concern’ on the updated list, with its weekly infection rate now climbing above 50 cases per 100,000 population.

Sam Corcoran, right, leader of Cheshire East Council, says that while the borough is not currently under local lockdown, there is the possibility that extra rules could be brought in if the situation continues to worsen.

In the seven days up to September 28, Cheshire East had an infection rate of 54.1 cases per 100,000, up from 36.7 over the previous week. The weekly rate for England is 59 cases per 100,000.

Mr Corcoran said: “To be clear, Cheshire East is not in a local lockdown. However, if our infection rates continue to climb to levels similar to areas already with increased restrictions, such as Warrington and Stockport, then it is likely that we will be asked to adopt a similar approach.

“But I hope that central government will work with local authorities, rather than impose rules across the region. “In the meantime, I would reiterate that in addition to the work of the council and its partners, there are simple steps that each of us personally can take to protect ourselves and each other.

“So please maintain social distancing, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water, and don’t touch your face.”
