HANLEY’S FINE CUP RUN IS OVER BUT TOWN AND RANGERS ARE THROUGH TO NEXT ROUND

- Phil Sherwin

HANLEY Town’s record breaking run in the FA Cup came to an end despite a brave performance with two late goals making it an unfair looking 4-1 defeat at Ilkeston Town.

Hanley went in front in the second qualifying round tie in the 21st minute when Niall Cope’s shot went under keeper Ross Durrant to send the visiting supporters into raptures.

Two goals in three minutes though turned things around for the home side.

Zak Goodson finished well in the 34th minute and three minutes later he set up Nat Watson to fire the ball into the top corner.

Hanley fought back after the break and in the 70th minute Ilkeston’s Ollie Brown-hill had to clear the ball off the line to prevent an equaliser.

And two minutes later Hanley were awarded a penalty, but the spot kick by substitute Ricardo Fuller, below , spot kick was well saved by Ross Durrant. Ilkeston extended their lead in the 82nd minute when Alex Troke set up Goodson to score with a shot into the roof of the net. Three minutes from time Ilkeston were awarded a penalty with Cope being sent off for dissent.

Troke scored from the spot to leave Hanley with good memories and the £1,125 loser’s prize money, taking their total winnings from the competition to almost £6,000.

NANTWICH TOWN booked their place in the next round with a 1-0 home win over Barwell, their fourth win in succession.

In dreadfully wet conditions Connor Heath had a goal disallowed for offside but in the 32nd minute they were awarded a penalty after Joe Mwasile was fouled by Micah Edwards.

James Lawrie‘s spot kick was saved though by Max Bramley.

Two minutes before the break Nantwich did manage to break the deadlock.

Joel Stair sent over a corner, Heath flicked it on and Mwasile drove the ball home. Barwell went close in the second half and Greg Hall saved well from Elliot Bramley.

Nantwich held on though to take the £3,375 in prize money. STAFFORD RANGERS also made it through to the next round, winning 4-2 on penalties after a hard fought goalless draw at Buxton. Boro ‘keeper Lewis King, left , was the hero with two penalty saves in the shootout before Sam Coulson drove the winner into the bottom corner. The game itself had few chances with Joe Cuff (twice) and Callum Coyle firing wide as Rangers sought a breakthrough.
