POLICE have named a man who died in a city street as a 16-year-old boy charged with his murder is due in court today.

Officers were called by paramedics to reports of a stabbing in Lightwood Road, Longton, shortly after midnight on Monday.

Matthew Dale, of Dresden, was rushed to Royal Stoke University Hospital but died en route to A&E.

Specially-trained police officers are supporting the 23-year-old’s family at this time while flowers have been laid at the scene.

A Staffordshire Police spokeswoman confirmed a postmortem has taken place, but said further tests are required.

The investigation into Matthew’s death continues and an appeal for anyone with information was issued.

The 16-year-old Stoke-on-trent boy arrested in connection with the incident cannot be named for legal reasons and will appear before magistrates this morning charged with murder.

The area of Lightwood Road where the incident took place remained cordoned off last night and family and friends laid flowers in tribute to Matthew.

The tragic death has shocked residents living nearby.

Lyndsey Knowles, aged 42, of Lockett’s Lane, said: “You see things like this on the telly, but you don’t expect it to happen where you live. My thoughts are with the victim’s family.”

Kayleigh Carter, aged 31, from Meir, said: “It’s very shocking. My first thought is with the man’s family. A 23-year-old doesn’t deserve to die at that age. It’s scary because I have two young children myself.”

And Abdul Hussain, aged 18, from

Dresden, said: “Incidents like these happen in London and now they are happening in Stoke-on-trent. My thoughts are with the victim’s family.”

Staffordshire Police are continuing to appeal for witnesses.
