Shunning experts will court disaster

-

FURTHER to the letter by D Nixon headlined ‘Ignore experts and carry on with life’ ( The Sentinel, October 9). I feel his frustration, but where does the prescriptive chaos really come from?

This is a new virus and science depended on technology for some of the answers to begin with, and now the reason for the lower admissions to hospital is due to scientific progress.

The World Health Organisation was saying ‘test, test, test’ when the virus first took hold and what did Boris Johnson, right , do? He opened the floodgate to the Covid-ridden countries telling them to come and join us in a game of footy and let’s not forget to go racing as well. Why test?

This flamboyant attitude was the result of Covid being introduced into our care homes, which resulted in the biggest percentage of Covid related deaths. To answer Mr Nixon’s other point about Sweden’s low death rate was because Sweden went in the opposite direction, everyone over the age of 70 was told to isolate. This included care homes. Universities and schools with children over 15 were also closed. This occurred from day one in Sweden, it was the time when Boris was missing from the Covid meetings. This Government has been the most incompetent of any in living memory and the chaos goes on, growing with every decision they make. Leaders of many boroughs are feeling they go forth blindly because of no clarity from central government. We are in a national crisis without a national leader.

If Boris had listened to science in the first place we would not be in the mess we are now. There is no way of knowing how far the virus has grown because the test and trace system has failed, the infection rate is far higher than the false statistics show us, yet this Government still persists in giving us false information with the wrong kind of message. How dangerous is that? How much longer are we going to have to suffer this incompetence?

Please listen to the experts, because the only other choice will lead to disaster.
