‘IT’S A NIGHTMARE, I’VE NEVER SEEN AN AREA QUITE SO BAD’

Mobile camera will be used to catch rat-run litterbugs

MOBILE cameras are being brought in to catch fly-tippers and litterbugs on a rat-run road.

Hollywall Lane – which links High Steet in Sandyford, and Chatterley Road in Tunstall – is a regular dumping ground.

The fly-tipping includes burnt-out cars, tyres, sofas and beds.

And the roadside is also littered with empty containers from the nearby Mcdonald’s and KFC branches.

Apprentice mechanic Jasmine Steel, aged 17, said: “It’s just a nightmare. I’ve never seen an area quite so bad as this.

“I think it has got worse since the restaurants have closed because you’ll see way more Maccies and KFC stuff dumped, no-one’s eating in. “Everyone’s taking out and then just chucking it out of the windows. Horrible.

“I don’t think anyone really cares for the environment. They cut through the main roads and they just chuck it.

“It’s not their issue, they don’t have to deal with the consequences.” Retired Roy Felton, aged 78, from Milton, said: “People will take it out of their cars and then dump it out of the window. I think that’s where most of the rubbish is coming from.” One local resident added: “It makes our lives a misery. It’s dangerous.

“There have been times where we’ve had sofas and beds and rubble blocking the road.

“We pay our taxes like everybody else and we expect at least a clean road.”

Residents have complained to Stoke-on-trent City Council about the issue.

The Sentinel revealed on Friday that the authority has received a total of 6,399 reports of dumped waste in the city over the past year.

Ward councillor Chandra Kanneganti, left, who represents Goldenhill and Sandyford, said: “That street is really disgraceful. We’re going to come up with a portable mobile camera to catch the culprit. Meanwhile, every Monday they’re cleaning the street to keep it clean.

“A lot of people are coming forward to volunteer. We will find the culprit.”
