CUSTOMERS have one last chance to sample the delights of Stoke-on-trent’s oldest bakery – before it shuts for good today.

London Road Bakehouse, in Stoke, shuts for the final time this afternoon after 140 years in the Potteries.

It is owned by Eddie and Marie Thomas, and run by their son Gareth, but the coronavirus pandemic has been described as the ‘final nail in the coffin’ for the bakery, which is popular with celebrities.

Gareth’s wife Rakha Begumthomas said: “We are very sad to be closing, but we have no choice.

“We had the markets, wholesale customers, and the shop. Two of our revenues have dried up during the pandemic.

“It has been really hard to keep going, but we have tried. It is just not feasible.”

Robin Wardell, right, of Wolstanton, has been a regular customer for five years.

He said: “It is all brilliant quality. I am gutted that it is closing. I usually have three loaves, but I have had an extra 10 – and hopefully I can get some more.”

Anna Mawson, aged 54, of Stoke, said: “I have lived here for 11 years and it was a treat to find this bakery.

“I understand the times we are in, but it is sad to see it go, I will miss it a lot. The brownies and the pies are great.

“It will be interesting to see how many shops on the High Street will remain open.

“All people can do is spend their money wisely and support small independent shops, which really need it the most.”

Gill Austin, of Clayton, has been using the shop for years.

She said: “I am horrified that it is closing – it will be very much missed. The quality is consistent. It is just an exceptional business.

“It is nice to shop locally and look for something that is handmade and a bit special.”

The bakery is open from 8am to 1pm today. Customers can place thier orders in advance by calling 07860 161375, or by sending an emailto rakha@bakehousebar.com.
