AN OFFENDER who tried to escape from the police by climbing over a wall and jumping a fence has now been jailed.

Stoke-on-trent Crown Court heard Jordan Brown fell as he fled and was finally arrested.

The 21-year-old had been the front seat passenger in a Vauxhall Corsa that was stopped by the officers in London Road, Stoke just after midnight on January 24.

Prosecutor Sally Cairns said: “Due to the strong smell of cannabis, the police searched the defendant.

“A red-handled lock knife was found in a bum bag, which he had round his waist. A large quantity of cash was in his pocket.

“While being handcuffed, the defendant made off. There was a chase.

“He was injured as he fell while climbing a wall and jumping over a fence.”

Brown, of Collin Road, Trent Vale, was arrested and gave a ‘no comment’ interview. But he went on to plead guilty to a charge of possession of an article with a blade or point in a public place.

The court was told there was no suggestion he had at any point during the incident brandished the weapon or made threats against the police.

He had simply had it in his possession at the time he was stopped and searched. But the incident also placed him in breach of a suspended sentence imposed for a similar offence.

Now Brown has been sentenced to a total of 15 months in custody, including six months for the latest offence. The rest of the term relates to triggering his suspended sentence. Judge David Fletcher told him: “I told you what would happen if you committed another offence. This has arisen because of the possession of a blade.”

A car had to be dragged out of the water on the edge of a park after the driver lost control.

Police were called by a member of the public who saw a Ford Fiesta lose control and smash through railings by Victoria Park in Stafford. The incident happened at 2.30am yesterday. A Staffordshire Police spokesman said: “A black Ford Fiesta had lost control at the junction of Newport Road and Station Road and crashed through some railings, ending up in the water around the edge of Victoria Park.

“Two people had been inside the car but had got themselves out safely despite the car being stuck at an angle.” Stafford Borough Council has been informed of the damage to the railings.
