A Dad-of-two left critically ill in hospital after being ‘poisoned’ has started to breathe on his own.

Restaurant worker Phillip Menzies was last night continuing to receive 24-hour care as he remained on a ventilator within the Royal Stoke University Hospital’s intensive care unit.

But the fact the 36-yearold has opened his eyes is a massive boost for dad Christopher Menzies-trull.

Mr Menzies, of Shelton, has been in the Royal Stoke ever since suffering a cardiac arrest at a property in Rowhurst Crescent,

Butt Lane, on March 20. A 43-year-old woman has been arrested and bailed on suspicion of ‘maliciously administering poison’ following the medical emergency.

Dad Christopher said: “Things have improved in that he has opened his eyes and he can breathe on his own.

“He has still got to go back onto the ventilator because of other problems with his health.

“They are trying to get him off the ventilator as soon as they can. He is still under 24-hour care in intensive care. He is generally improving. He is on a drip still.” Christopher added: “Seeing the support has been wonderful. There have been some great greetings and good wishes for him. It’s heartwarming to see a lot of people have got his back. I didn’t know he knew so many people.”

Sentinel readers have rallied round in support of Mr Menzies during his health fight.

Steve Woodcock said: “You will pull through this Phillip. You’re not leaving Shelton anytime soon, mate.”

Kelley Price added: “He is a lovely guy. He used to come in the chip shop I worked at in Shelton with his two little boys. I hope he pulls through.”
