-

ASUPERSTORE is giving away top prizes in a weekly raffle as a way of giving back to the community who have supported them during the coronavirus pandemic – as the build up to Ramadan begins.

Al-madina Superstore, in Normacot Road, Longton, is entering customers who spend over £75 into a raffle, which will be drawn every Friday.

The prizes include a 15” TV, toaster, kettle, hoover and much more.

Business director Hasan Iqbal, aged 23, is looking forward to the store’s atmosphere during Ramadan – which begins on the evening of April 12.

Ramadan is an Islamic holy month and is observed by fasting between sunrise and sunset.

Hasan said: “It’s about building up that momentum. We’ve started two weeks earlier to get people into that spirit.

“With everything that’s been going on with Covid it’s tough, so we wanted to cheer people up a bit.

“People are suffering and struggling with jobs and trying to get by financially so we wanted to give something back to the community.

“As a business it’s important to us to give something back to Stoke-on-trent.

“The business gets busier during Ramadan. It’s an exciting time and there’s a real sense of community spirit.

“The atmosphere completely changes and there’s a different vibe. The store has a great atmosphere because everyone is looking forward to opening their fast.”

The foods most commonly bought during Ramadan are dates, rice, chicken and Rooh Afza – a traditional summer drink which helps quench thirst.

Al-madina’s offers include dates at £6 per kilo and chicken mince for £2.49 a kilo.

Hasan added: “With the changes in the weather we have offers on soft drinks too. We’ve also got frozen samosas and other goods.

“We are getting a range of customers coming in for their spices and vegetables. We are not just targeting Muslims in this campaign, we are welcoming all the community to come and take advantage of the offers we have in place.

“Three things we won’t be beaten on are quality, service and price. It’s our main focus as a business.

“We are still putting all the Covid-19 safety measures in place such as wearing masks and doing what’s important. We have all got to look out for each other and stay safe.

“We’ve got a marquee outside so inside is not rammed. People are following the rules. They understand the risk is high, we have got sanitisers at the entrance too.”
