COVER STORY

- By RACHEL LAWTON CHARLOTTE GARNER

A DOG lover has published her first book.

Canine Contentment: The Essential Guide, by Charlotte Garner, from Biddulph, is a guidebook to better understand our four-legged friends.

The book shares tips and tricks to help owners improve the relationship they have with their pet.

It covers a wide range of topics including communication, body language, diet and positive training methods, as well as busting common myths that surround dogs.

Author Charlotte, 26, has four border collies called Sky, Tizzy, Inka and Delta, and has mixed facts with her own experiences to create the guidebook. Charlotte also runs her small business,

Snack Pack, selling natural dog treats and eco friendly dog products.

She said: “I first qualified as a veterinary care assistant and did a diploma in canine behaviour.

“Just before lockdown last year I was working as a team leader at a home boarding and daycare centre for dogs called the Dog Den. I was there for about 12 months before I sadly got made redundant due to the effects of the pandemic. “The book is really a culmination of facts and research I have done, as well as my own experiences to make things more relatable.” Canine Contentment was published earlier this month through Canine Principles, with whom Charlotte has already completed various online courses around dog behaviour. She continued: “If you can understand your dog better, then they will be happier – and so will you.

“I am really passionate about positive reinforcement training which is how I teach my dogs. Dogs aren’t born with the knowledge, so they do need your help.

“A lot of people got lockdown puppies last year, and being a first-time dog owner can be really overwhelming, so I just want to share my tips and help other people.

“I’ve always wanted to write a book but never really had the time. I’ve done online diplomas with Canine Principles before, and they did a 30-day course in January, so I decided to do that. There were lots of writing tips and I worked on the book over the month, and then a little bit after as well.

“It’s for all dog owners, whether you have one dog or several, and whether it’s your first dog or you’re more experienced. “I’d love to write more books in the future so hopefully this is the first of many!”
