A WOMAN who has spent much of her life fundraising for good causes has celebrated her 100th birthday.

Mary Oldfield was born on March 27, 1921, in Stanley.

After her marriage, she and late husband George moved to Ipstones, where she lived for more than 70 years until moving in with her daughter in Cellarhead two years ago.

And Saturday was a double celebration as Mary attended the JCB factory in Cheadle to get her second Covid-19 jab.

She also received a card from the Queen, as well as many cards and flowers from well-wishers.

Mary has one daughter, Glynnis, two grandchildren and four greatgrandchildren.

She was a founder member of the Ipstones and Foxt Senior Citizens’ Association, and regularly visited fellow pensioners who were feeling under the weather.

For more than 60 years, Mary has held scores of cheese-and-wine evenings and made hundreds of jars of marmalade to raise funds for good causes.

Mary said: “I have been overwhelmed by the generosity of people. I am very grateful to everybody. All the donations will be sent to the Air Ambulance for their work.

“I am very lucky as I can still hold a good conversation with people.

“I have fundraised throughout my life, I think this helped to keep me going.

“I have received lots of letters from people for my birthday, including one from the Ipstones and Foxt pensioners.

“I have enjoyed life and I have never fallen out with anyone – just had a different opinion on occasions.”

In October 2010, Mary won the Special Recognition category at the Staffordshire Moorlands community awards, held at Alton Towers.

During her life, Mary has been a big fan of singing star Daniel O’donnell, above. She has followed the star’s career since he started in the business.

For her 90th birthday, while having lunch with her family Mary was left stunned when Daniel gave her a call, which left her speechless.

On Saturday, Mary received a video message from the singing star wishing her a happy 100th birthday. Both had been organised by her grandaughter.
