‘PETER WAS A LONG-SERVING, LOYAL MEMBER OF THE PDSL’

-

LOCAL football is mourning the passing of stalwart Peter Hicks.

Hicks, who was chairman of the Potteries and District Sunday League, died last month at the age of 75. His long service to the local game didn’t start as a player, but when he took on the secretarial role for Richmond Leisure and then Sheltonbased Norfolk Inn.

This introduced Hicks, who lived in Clayton, to PDSL meetings - and paved the way for his lengthy association with the league.

He joined the committee more than 30 years ago and became disciplinary secretary, before becoming chairman following the death of John Lewis.

Hicks served the league with distinction, even though his health deteriorated.

A PDSL statement read: “Although Peter developed health conditions over the last few years, he continued to carry out his football duties,

“He was always available to give sound, logical and informed advice, guidance, or support to anyone connected to the league or local footballing community. “Peter was determined to continue his loyal commitment to both roles on behalf of the PDSL.

“His diagnosis did not prevent him continuing to chair meetings and rally his committee to prepare for the current football season. Quite the opposite as it seemed to spur him on.

“He involved himself in the day-to-day running of the league, ensuring everything that could be put into place to get the season underway as smoothly as possible was done.

“Many hours were spent discussing rule changes, referees, departing and incoming teams and the set-up of the divisions for the coming season. He kept himself up to date with the accounts, keeping a watchful eye on monies in and out and that clubs were meeting their financial responsibilities, to ensure the league was financially sound. “Although he was not directly involved, as chairman, he ensured he was kept appraised of any matters relating to the Veterans League. Peter will be forever remembered as a longserving, loyal servant of the Potteries and District Sunday League.

“Our deepest and heartfelt condolences are sent to his wife, Sandra, and his family. “Rest in peace, Peter – you’ve earned it.”
