CLIMATE change and the need for sustainability affects us all. Which is why Lidl is stepping up to the challenge, because it believes that good value does not mean the environment or suppliers should pay the price.
Lidl is committed to delivering quality, sustainable food with its focus on “changes for the better”. It means that Lidl customers can shop with confidence, knowing that while they’re getting the best value for money, it’s not costing the earth.
SUSTAINABLE
Lidl is making positive changes for producers, people and the planet. Back in 2018, as part of efforts to tackle global deforestation, Lidl became the first UK retailer to certify 100 per cent of its soy (used for animal feed) supply chain as sustainable.
But its efforts do not stop there.
Lidl is committed to purchasing all of its electricity from renewable sources to help support the decarbonisation of the UK power sector. Across its stores and warehouses, it has focused its efficiency efforts on refrigeration and lighting, with over 90 per cent of store lighting using efficient LED technology.
Meanwhile Lidl has already installed rapid electric vehicle charging points in more than 150 stores, and plans to increase this number to 300 in 2022. It is also installing solar panels on all new stores, where possible.
Due to its focus on the environment, Lidl is on course to achieve its goal of becoming a carbon neutral business by 2022, while also driving significant reductions in its supply chain.
Corporate social responsibility manager at Lidl GB, Mark Newbold, says, “This is a crucial year in the fight against climate change and we recognise our responsibility to reduce our carbon impact. The majority of our impact comes from the food we sell and we’re committed to working closely with our suppliers to support them to take the action needed.
“Across all areas of our business we strive to optimise efficiency. Whether installing more solar panels to generate renewable energy for our stores, or helping our customers access our stores more sustainably through the rollout of electric car charging points, we are continuing to find ways to cut emissions.”
