Campaigners say it will be safer for children

DOZENS of worried parents have backed a campaign for a one-way system to be brought in on the road outside their children’s school.

A total of 144 mums and dads have added their names to a petition calling for the change to be made along Mobberley Road in Goldenhill.

They hope it will ease traffic and in turn improve safety around St Joseph’s Catholic Academy at pick-up and drop-off times.

Their concerns centre on the road not being wide enough to accommodate the large amount of cars at busy times.

The petition is due to be discussed by Stoke-on-trent City Council today.

Mum Sharne Bailey, who works in healthcare, is backing the proposal.

The 32-year-old, from Chell, said: “It’s a very good idea. It will be safer for the children.

“Sometimes when the traffic is parked here it can be horrific coming up and down. It’s not going to cause too much disruption.

“There’s no fronts of houses, it’s just the school front.

“The police are sometimes here managing parking because there’s been beeping horns.

“Normally around winter this road is horrific for ice and snow and a lot of slide backs happen.

“It’s also the width of the path, that’s where safety concerns are.”

Sandyford beautician Michelle Selvy also agreed a one-way system would help with safety concerns.

The 41-year-old said: “It’s a good idea. I think it will be much safer for the kids.

“Parking in the morning when people are dropping their kids off, it’s quite dangerous.”

Wojciech Kotlenga, from Fegg Hayes, said: “It would just keep the traffic flowing, you wouldn’t be waiting for a person to come the other way.

“There’s a problem, especially when you are dropping off.”

The 38-year-old HGV driver added: “There isn’t much room there, so people just park all over the place.

“If you want to park, and the car’s coming from the other way you have to wait, or it just goes on. It’s going to make life a bit easier.”
