A RACIST thug attacked his partner’s former lover and called him the P-word after flying into a jealous rage.

Dad-of-one Hamza Karabulut lashed out at his girlfriend’s ex who came to their house following her request for money.

Stoke-on-trent Crown Court heard the 38-year-old appeared from an alleyway and hit his victim seven times with a black metal torch.

Now the defendant, of Osprey Close, Leek, has been handed a suspended sentence.

Peter Mccartney, prosecuting, said the violence erupted on September 12, 2019, after Karabulut’s partner had called her ex asking for £50.

He said: “Stacey is the ex-partner of the victim. Their relationship ended in April 2019. She had then entered a relationship with Mr Karabulut.

“The victim was to drop off the money that evening. At around 7.30pm she contacted him and said Mr Karabulut was there.

“The victim was with a mate and they had travelled to Leek. She told him to wait until the defendant left.

“The defendant came out of an alleyway. He was holding a black torch and hit the victim on the left shoulder causing him to fall to the floor. He was hit seven times.

“The defendant called the victim a ‘p*** b ****** ’. He said he had been waiting a long time to fight him. He was waiting for the arrival of the victim for 23 minutes.

“It’s racially aggravated.”

The court heard the victim went home and phoned the police before going to hospital where scans revealed he had bruising on his shoulder and swelling on his foot

Karabulut was arrested at his home where police found the torch and a baton.

When interviewed he claimed he did not attack the victim nor make any racist comments.

In an impact statement, the victim said: “The attack has affected me. I feel pain in my shoulder. I’m scared that man knows my address. He could’ve killed me that day.

“I’m very nervous. I was off work for three weeks. I had to pay my mortgage and child maintenance which was difficult.”

Karabulut went on to plead guilty to racially aggravated assault.

Stephen Rudge, mitigating, said: “This was never premeditated. He accepts the torch caused injury. While there’s a weapon used, it’s not a highly-dangerous weapon.

“He has always been employed and well thought of. If he goes to custody it won’t do him any good.

“He is the sole breadwinner. He looks after his child and her children from a previous relationship. She speaks highly of him. He admits that he went too far.”

Karabulut, who works for Churnet Valley Garden, was handed an 18-month sentence, suspended for 18 months. He must also complete 20 hours of rehabilitation activity requirement and 100 hours unpaid work. He will also be electronically monitored via a tag.

Judge David Fletcher told him: “I have no doubt that this incident was borne out of jealousy. The phrase you used is known to be an awful reference and extremely concerning.

“This was a serious matter. In my view there’s some planning.”
