‘SNOWFLAKES JUST NEED TO GET A GRIP!’

Readers react to calls to scrap stand-up gig

FANS of controversial comic Roy Chubby Brown have hit out at ‘snowflakes’ calling for his Victoria Hall gig to be cancelled this Christmas.

Hundreds of Sentinel readers insist the foul-mouthed comic should be allowed to return to Stoke-on-trent, despite some people finding his ‘jokes’ offensive.

It comes after Stoke-on-trent woman Caroline Key wrote to Stokeon-trent Central MP Jo Gideon and Stoke-on-trent City Council calling for the gig to be scrapped amid racism, homophobia and sexism concerns.

She spoke out after his performance at Sheffield’s City Hall was canned for those reasons.

But Tracy Bates is among those who believes Chubby should be allowed to play in Hanley.

She said: “Get a life. People wouldn’t go to see Chubby Brown if they are offended easily. If you like Chubby, then you know things he says are a bit close to the bone sometimes.

“But cheer up, stop picking fault with anyone and everything. Live a little. If you are going to see Chubby, enjoy it.”

Simon Baxter agreed, saying: “For as long as he can still sell tickets for his shows and it makes him a living he should just carry on.

“If you don’t like him that’s your choice. Don’t try and force your opinions on other people, just get on with your own life.”

Jay Bryan said: “What’s happening? The world’s gone mad.

“If you don’t like Chubby you don’t go – simple. No-one is forcing you. It’s called freedom of choice, something that is slowly becoming a thing of the past.”

Helen Ashdown Smith added: “So suddenly, after God knows how many years, he’s obscene? He’s the same as he’s always been.

“You either love him or hate him. Just because he talks about life as it really is makes him obscene? Snowflakes just need to get a grip.”

David Ecclestone said: “Chubby has played Hanley for years. And he loves playing Stoke-on- Trent.

“If you don’t like the show, don’t buy a ticket.”

Sybil Hadgett added: “It should not be cancelled just because woke people don’t like his act.

“They have a choice, they don’t have to go and watch him. He’s been doing his act for years so it shows people do like him.”

And Simon Carson said: “We are in danger of cancelling anything funny. If you don’t like the humour, don’t go to the show – it’s not difficult.”

The Victoria Hall is advising under-18s to stay away from the performance.

Its promotional material states: “He’s still rude, he’s still crude, and this time he’s turning headlines into punchlines as his rip-roaring brand of banter continues to burst bellies across the country.

“Chubby doesn’t hold back from sharing his outlandish views on the news, women and gender, sailing so close to the mark even the most seasoned of fans will be left gobsmacked. If easily offended, please stay away.”

Tickets for the one-night only show are currently on sale, priced at £21.50 or £25.50.

A Victoria Hall spokesman said: “Roy Chubby Brown is set to play at the Victoria Hall on Friday, December 17.”
