‘KEEP HOLD OF YOUR RECEIPT!’

Shopper’s warning after he was chased by Asda staff after using self-service till

AN Asda shopper has issued a warning to all customers of the Wolstanton branch – after he was ‘chased by two members of staff’.

Chris Morris paid for his groceries at the supermarket’s self-checkout tills before making his way outside.

But he says it was at this point he was challenged by two workers who suspected he had not paid for the goods.

He was only saved from ‘further embarrassment’ during this week’s incident as he had kept the receipt.

Now Chris is urging all other Asda shoppers at Wolstanton Retail Park to keep hold of proof of purchase just in case.

He said: “I don’t usually shop in Asda Wolstanton so figuring out the self service check out can be puzzling.

“But I wanted to offer a word of warning to make sure people take their receipt as two Asda staff members chased after me and said that my payment had not gone through.

“When producing my receipt this put an end to the embarrassment but may have been a different story with no receipt.

“At first I was taken aback by the two staff members who hurriedly came after me in the store. I felt angry afterwards when I got to the car.”

An Asda spokesman said they always aim to be ‘discrete’ when

approaching customers in such circumstances.

He added: ‘’Just like every store, should a colleague suspect a customer hasn’t properly paid for their shopping we will politely ask for a proof of purchase.

“If a customer has chosen not to take a receipt from the self-service tills we may ask for them to wait while we have a look at the transaction history on the machine.

“Although we have not received any complaints about this particular request for a receipt, we never aim to embarrass any customer when asking for proof of purchase and aim to do so discretely.’’

Self-checkouts can weigh items to check customers are paying for the items they bought.

Supermarkets also employ staff and security guards to ensure they are being used correctly.
