DRIVER CAUGHT OVER LIMIT AFTER CASINO REFUSED ENTRY
CAR insurance worker Jacob Massey was caught drink-driving after he was turned away from a casino.
The 24-year-old and a friend had tried to get in to the Genting Casino in Hanley, but were refused entry.
Staff at the venue then raised the alarm when Massey drove away in his Mercedes.
Magistrates at North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard police later stopped the car in Fenton and found Massey was more than twice the legal drinkdrive limit.
Prosecutor Sue Hayers said: “Staff contacted CCTV operators because, having been refused entry, he was seen to get into a white Mercedes and drive away.
“The vehicle was located in the car park of the Grosvenor Casino. Police saw it being driven at some speed. The vehicle was stopped and a breath test was positive.”
Massey, of Bowers Drive, Silverdale, was taken to police custody, where he gave an alcohol reading of 97 micrograms in 100 millilitres of breath. The legal limit is 35.
He pleaded guilty to driving while over the alcohol limit following the offence, which took place on November 16.
Stuart Flood, mitigating, said: “He’s a hard-working young man who had gone through a difficult period. His friend had suggested they go out for a drink to cheer him up. He made a mistake – we all make them. He has expressed deep remorse for his actions.”
Magistrates handed Massey a 12-month community order and disqualified him from driving for 24 months, which will be reduced if he takes a drink-drive rehabilitation course.
Chairman of the bench, Adrian Jackson, told him: “This was a terrible mistake on your part, but it was very serious because the consequences could have been quite devastating.”
Massey must complete 100 hours of unpaid work. He must also pay £230 in court charges.
