A MUM has been sent to prison after she assaulted two women and spat at a police officer.

Tanya Burndred appeared in court after being charged in connection with two separate altercations in Hanley.

The first saw her punch a female drinker in the face in the Market Tavern pub.

While during the second - at Hanley bus station - she pushed a woman off a bench and told her, ‘I suggest you move before I batter you’.

When police were called, 32-year-old Burndred became aggressive and spat in an officer’s face.magistrates at North Staffordshire Justice Centre heard the first incident took place on January 21.

Prosecutor Zoe Leese said: “At about 4pm, the defendant was at the Market Tavern with a male. The victim was at the bar and could see there was an issue between them and the bar staff. The defendant and the male were asked to leave.

“Miss Burndred then began to push the taps behind the bar, spilling beer, and having a confrontation with bar staff.

“The victim told the defendant not to do that. The defendant then punched the victim in the face and said, ‘What the **** ’s it got to do with you?’, before walking out sticking two fingers up.”

The second incident happened on

March 22, when the second victim was at the bus station. Ms Leese said: “The defendant went over and started being abusive. The complainant was pushed off a bench. The defendant said, ‘I suggest you move before I batter you’.

“Police approached and spoke to her. She became aggressive and abusive. She turned to an officer and spat in his face.”

Burndred, below, of Blurton Road, Blurton, was arrested. She went on to plead guilty to two charges of assault and one of assaulting an emergency worker.

As well as breaching a suspended sentence order, the offences put her in breach of a conditional discharge. She has a previous conviction for assaulting a police office, for which she was jailed for 10 weeks.

Stuart Muldoon, mitigating, said Burndred’s alcohol problem was the root of her offending. “Miss Burndred is a young woman who has overcome adversity in her past to grow into a strong, independent woman who was a proud mum and in work.

“Then her relationship ended due to the actions of her partner. She lost her job and her life spiralled out of control. She became homeless and started drinking to excess. She became involved in a toxic, abusive relationship. Her convictions then begin.

“All her convictions involve the use of alcohol. She drinks on a daily basis. When she is in drink, she is a completely different person.”

Magistrates said the offences were so serious that Burndred must receive a prison sentence. They sentenced her to a total of 18 weeks in custody, including four weeks of her previous suspended sentence.
