FREE OUTDOOR FILMS FOR JUBILEE CELEBRATIO­NS

Pop-up cinema coming to town centre

FILM fans can enjoy outdoor movie screenings at a pop-up open air cinema in Newcastle.

The free shows will take place in front of the Guildhall as part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebratio­ns on Thursday, June 2, and Friday, June 3.

Residents can enjoy a live stream of the BBC’S Jubilee coverage from 10am on both days followed by two free family-friendly films.

On the Thursday the films will be The Queen’s Corgi at 2pm and The Greatest Showman at

5pm, celebratin­g Newcastle ‘s heritage as the birthplace of the modern circus, while on the Friday there will be a screening of Coco, below, at 2pm and Mamma Mia! at 5pm. Movie watchers are encouraged to take their own chairs and picnic blankets to enjoy the film. Street food will be available as well as face painting and Jubileethe­med crafts for children. Newcastle BID marketing manager Charlotte Pearce said: “We are delighted to welcome the public to our outdoor cinema to celebrate the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee and bank holiday. We are very excited to bring the big screen to Newcastle town centre and offer a unique experience for people of all ages that is available free of charge. “Our outdoor cinema is one of the ongoing events in the town centre that is hosted by the BID and funded by the town centre businesses. We really hope the people of Newcastle and beyond will turn out in support as these events are the perfect opportunit­y to showcase the range of hardworkin­g retail, hospitalit­y, and leisure businesses in the town centre.”

The Guildhall will be open from 10am to 4pm from Thursday, June 2, to Sunday, June 5, with a display of memorabili­a from the Queen’s 70-year-reign, as well as an exhibition of entries from a recent children’s art competitio­n. There will also be quizzes and crafts for kids.

In addition, there will be drumming workshops, coronation­s, storytelli­ng and period films screened by Ray Johnson of the Staffordsh­ire Film Archive on Saturday, as well as chorus performanc­es, belly dancing, magic shows and face painting on the Sunday, alongside a charity and plant market.

On the same weekend, the town’s Brampton Museum will be hosting a 1950s day on the Saturday including free heritage film screenings, such as royal visits over the years, and a dance performanc­e by Baker Street Belle and DJ Swan. And on the Sunday afternoon visitors will be able to enjoy a picnic at The Little Vintage Tea Room from 1.30pm to 5pm as part of the national Big Jubilee Lunch.
