JUBILEE PLATES MOSAIC SET TO ‘LEAVE LEGACY’
Creative project to mark Queen’s big event
A MOSAIC of decorated plates marking the evolution of a historic pottery group during the Queen’s reign is being produced to mark her Platinum Jubilee celebrations.
A creative partnership will work with Dudson Centre tenants and service users to create the elements that will make up the exhibit.
The decorated plates will show off the evolution of the historic pottery of the Dudson group over the course of Her Majesty’s reign, encompassing the ‘Then and Now’ theme of the Jubilee event.
VAST – a charity dedicated to developing, advancing, and promoting the voluntary, community and social enterprise sector – is working with The Cultural Sisters on the project.
The Cultural Sisters is an arts organisation using creative processes to engage with people of all ages, abilities and cultural and social backgrounds.
Liza Rivia, from the Cultural Sisters, said: “We are approaching this lovely project collaboratively and we look forward to working with the tenants and service users, the museum curator, and other members of staff to create a display of personal yet connected place settings, inspired by Dudson ware and the experiences and ideas from participants.”
Dudson Centre facilities manager Jackie Wheeler said: “We are incredibly excited to be able to use the fascinating history of the Dudson collection to unite those who use the centre, to bring together people from all walks of life, and of course, to celebrate this historic Jubilee.
“Not only will we be able to create a lasting legacy of these celebrations, but the finished piece will also be on display permanently in the Dudson Centre where it can be admired by everyone who passes by for years to come.”
The big reveal of the mosaic will take place at the Dudson Centre at a Jubilee celebration event on Tuesday June 7.
This event will be taking place for people from all around the city to celebrate together at a 1950s style fete with lots of entertainment and activities for adults and children alike.
Donated by the Dudson family in 1996, the Dudson Centre was opened by Her Majesty The Queen in 1999 following major refurbishment works.
The centre is built on a former pottery factory site, and the impressive Dudson Museum provides a fascinating insight into local history that attracts pottery enthusiasts from all over the world.
Free tickets for the Platinum Jubilee celebration are available through Eventbrite.
