Mchale and Degg produce star turns as Staffordshire Over-50s win once again

-

STAFFORDSHIRE Over-50s made it two wins out of two in County Championship Group Four with an easy win on their trip to Herefordshire.

Guy Bulpitt’s side had opened their campaign by showing plenty of fighting spirit in beating Warwickshire in their first fixture at Hampton & Solihull.

Their second adventure on the road wasn’t as close as that encounter, though, as they banked a 100-run victory at Eastnor to maintain their impressive start.

Bulpitt won the toss and elected to bat first in a match which was reduced to 35 overs per side.

Staffordshire showed off their batting prowess, however, and managed to rattle up 208-6 from their allocation to leave themselves in the driving seat.

A third-wicket stand of 70 between Jason Carrigan and Robert Lawrence, who both made 38, provided excellent foundations for the visitors.

That was backed up by Paul Mchale and Tony Dutton, who added 52 for the fifth wicket.

Dutton compiled 29, but it was Mchale who was the star of the Staffordshire batting performance as he helped himself to an unbeaten half-century.

He finished on 68 not out, an innings which took just 50 balls and contained six fours and one six.

Julian Morris (3-44) was the pick of the Herefordshire attack - and then top-scored with a breezy 39 at the top of their run chase.

However, his batting effort was the only noteworthy contribution to the home side’s innings as they struggled to gain any momentum in their quest to knock off the tough target.

Silverdale seamer Glynn Moore kept a tight rein on proceedings with a couple of victims before he passed the baton to Blythe skipper Scott Degg to turn the screw.

The left-arm spinner, pictured, worked his way through his repertoire to capture 4-13 as Herefordshire limped to 108-8 from their 35 overs.

The win leaves Staffordshire, along with Wales, as the only sides with perfect records after two rounds of matches.
