ACT OF VANDALISM:

-

A resident in supported accommodation has been fined for breaking a CCTV camera. Richard Motum did not like the fact that the camera covered the entrance to his flat.

The 49-year-old made a rude gesture towards the camera before punching it. He then came back with a hammer and smashed it.

The act of vandalism at the Rethink property in Cheadle left the organisation with a £200 bill to replace the equipment. Magistrates at North Staffordshire Justice Centre, pictured, heard the camera was on the landing outside Motum’s flat. Prosecutor Emma Thompson said: “The defendant stuck up his middle finger to the camera and punched it. Then he came back with a hammer.

“Staff saw the defendant smash the CCTV. He was stood on the landing with a hammer.

“They believed he was drunk and under the influence of monkey dust. Police arrived and spoke to the defendant. He was subsequently arrested.” Motum, of Bank Street, Cheadle, pleaded guilty to causing criminal damage. The court heard his last conviction was in 2003.

Emma Wiseman, mitigating, said: “He was not happy with the camera being placed there. It was directed at his flat door and he believed that was an intrusion.

“It had been there for a few weeks. It was only when he was drinking that day that he felt he needed to take some action. He has apologised.

“He has some considerable problems, hence the reason he is living in supported accommodation. He is remorseful.” Magistrates handed Motum a 12-month conditional discharge, which means he will not be punished if he stays out of trouble for that period. He was ordered to pay £200 compensation plus £157 in costs.
