‘SOMEBODY KICKED MY DOOR IN – I DON’T FEEL SAFE LIVING HERE NOW’

Disabled great-gran pleads with council to rehouse her

A DISABLED greatgrandmother says she has been waiting since January to be rehoused after her front door was kicked in – leaving her petrified.

Ann Ferriday, aged 61, lives alone in her one-bedroom council bungalow in Fegg Hayes. The triple stroke victim has been living in the property for 14 months. But she says she no longer feels safe there.

Ann, who has 22 greatgrandchildren, says she was told by the council she would be put on the housing list five months ago.

But after hearing nothing, she asked again and was told she was never put on the waiting list. Now she says it has left her with ‘no life’.

“My door was kicked down in January,” said Ann. “It was knocked off its hinges. I called the police and locked myself in my bedroom.

“I’ve had three strokes, I have a stick, I’m disabled and very vulnerable. I don’t feel safe since it happened.

“I called the council and they said I would be put on the waiting list to move house. But when nothing happened I inquired again and I was told I hadn’t been put on the list in the first place. I asked why and they said it wasn’t enough reason to be moved from the property. I’ve heard nothing from them since and I’m still not on the list.

“I live here alone in a one bedroom bungalow and I don’t feel safe here at all now. I don’t go anywhere because I’m frightened for my own safety, I always think somebody is behind me.

“My mental health is really bad. I had a panic attack when they told me I wasn’t on the list. I’ve not been eating and not sleeping. I just have the image of my door coming in again. I think the council have let me down very badly. I have no life.

“All I want to do is move somewhere safe and get on with my life somewhere that I’m not going to feel threatened or like someone is going to come for me.”

The Sentinel has approached the council for comment.
