A CURRY house is making a very special dish to commemorate the Platinum Jubilee – but you’ll have to be quick, as it’s only available for four days.

Gandhi Indian Restaurant, inside the Hunter pub in Saverley Green, Fulford, has created the Raanee Kanha curry, to mark the occasion. But the curry will only be available to eat dine-in for just four days, from June 2 to June 4.

Raanee Kanha literally translates to ‘Queen’s Food’. Owner Nazim Uddin Ahmed, known as Ali, said: “We’re doing a special curry in honour of the Queen’s Jubilee.

“It’s a special decorative dish. Everyone is doing something for the Jubilee, even beers, so we thought we would make something in her honour.

“We might be the only Indian restaurant in the country doing that. We are a small village and through the lockdown we had a lot of support from the community – we reopened about a month ago. People’s lives are getting back to normality slowly. There were too many restrictions before.

“Coronavirus is going away and there’s a war going on. People are depressed so we thought we would cheer everything up with something to celebrate. We wanted to create a dish that’s dedicated to the Queen.”

The curry, which is medium-hot, includes mango and is available in chicken or lamb.

Ali, who has owned the restaurant for 10 years, added: “Queen Victoria’s favourite was mango. It has always been a royal favourite. It takes a lot of hard work to make this curry. That’s why we’re only doing it for four days. Our local community is very strong and that’s how we survived the pandemic.”
