44,100 Stoke-on-trent households set to be handed a cost-of-living payment

MORE than 60,000 North Staffordsh­ire households will be able to apply for the Government’s means-tested cost-ofliving payment.

A constituen­cy-by-constituen­cy summary of the number of eligible households released by the Government shows that 60,200 households will be eligible for the payment.

This includes 14,800 homes in Stoke-on-trent Central, 16,200 in Stoke-on-trent North and 13,100 in Stoke-on-trent South – a total of 44,100 across the city.

A total of 9,800 are eligible in Newcastle, with a further 6,300 in the Staffordsh­ire Moorlands.

There will also be an additional disability grant, for which 48,500 households can apply in

North Staffordsh­ire.

Across the UK, 8,213,000 households will be able to apply for the cost of living grant.

The Government has confirmed that payments will begin from July 14. The payments on this date will be the first of two totalling £650, with the second one going out in the autumn.

To be able to claim the first payment, households must be entitled to Universal Credit or a different type of income support. The dates for additional payments have yet to be confirmed.

All pensioner households are also set to receive a further payment of £300 to help them cover costs over the winter.

Work and Pensions Secretary Thérèse Coffey, above, said: “With

millions of the lowest-income households soon seeing the first of two cash instalment­s land into their bank accounts, we are taking action to directly help families with the cost-of-living. “This one-off payment totalling £650 is part of our £37 billion cost of living support package that will put an extra £1,200 into the pockets of those most in need.”
