PLANS for a major housing development have taken a step forward – six years after initial planning permission was granted.

Elan Homes wants to put up 157 homes and a community centre on land off Sandon Road in Cresswell.

The residential development is part of a wide scheme for the site, near Blythe Bridge, which also includes a commercial development. Outline planning consent, granted in May 2016, covers a single site separated into two parcels by Blythe Business Park.

The proposed housing estate and community facility are to the west and south-west of the business park, while the commercial development is to the east. Staffordshire Moorlands District Council has now received a ‘reserved matters’ application setting out the finer details of the housing scheme, which the authority will consider.

It states that the 157 homes would consist of a variety of housing types to ‘create mixed communities’. These would predominantly be two-storey houses but also apartments in three-storey blocks situated at the entrance to the development.

The plans also include the provision of ‘affordable housing’, with the shared ownership and social rent dwellings. The proposal also features a community centre with an attached shop, plus children’s play facilities and a multi-use games area.

In April, an application to vary two proposed junctions within the outline permission by replacing roundabouts with traffic lights was refused, due to concerns regarding highway safety and the impact on residents. The requested changes to the access road had prompted a flurry of objections from people living nearby.

An appeal against this refusal has been lodged.
