ARTISTS are being urged to submit entries for the headline exhibition at a major ceramics festival taking place in Stoke-on-trent.

The British Ceramics Biennial (BCB) is reaching out to Ukbased artists who use clay as their primary creative material.

The BCB wants them to apply for AWARD 23 which will exhibit their work at the BCB festival - which returns to the city from September 23 to November 5 in 2023.

Ten artists will be selected, with each one awarded £1,000 towards a presentation of their work in the BCB festival.

From the 10 artists one prize winner is selected and awarded a £10,000 cash prize during BCB.

The AWARD winner in 2021 was Stephen Dixon, inset above, for his installation Transient: The Ship of Dreams and Nightmares.

Stephen, an artist and Professor Emeritus at Manchester School of Art, has been announced as one of the selectors for the BCB AWARD 2023. The others are:

Dr Guan Lee, Founder of Grymsdyke Farm, architect and lecturer; Jenni Lomax, curator, writer and visual arts and education consultant; Clare Wood, Artistic Director and CEO of the British Ceramics Biennial.

The selection process will be chaired by Alun Graves, Senior Curator for Ceramics and Glass at the V&A.

Clare, inset below, said: ‘AWARD is the leading exhibition of contemporary ceramic art in the UK. “It celebrates ground-breaking, progressive practice and allows artists to challenge themselves and the ceramics status quo.

This headline exhibition of the BCB festival takes audiences on a journey with contemporary ceramics, solidifying the role of clay as a rich material for storytelling, experimentation, playfulness, risk taking and activism.’ Applications are welcome from individual artists, collaborators or collectives who want to use the opportunity to tread new ground and present new work in ways that it hasn’t previously been experienced, or use the momentum of the exhibition to focus or make a step change in their practice. Applications are now open, and the deadline for submissions is midnight on 12 October 2022. Details can be found on the British Ceramics Biennial website: www.britishceramicsbiennial.com
